On the 18th of June 2002, I sat down with Alfie Albo and Ray Keane and listened to some great stories about the old days in Rossland. This is that session.
The cover photo is of Alfie in the Aldon cruising up the Arrow Lakes in June of 1952. My family had a cabin at Syringa Creek just a few doors down from Alfie’s boathouse when I was a kid, and those are some of my best memories growing up. Alfie bought the boat at Crescent Beach on Kootenay Lake about 1940, give or take a year, from a man named Ivar Fosheim, who claimed he had been with Raold Amundsen on an expedition. Ivar died in Trail in 1944. He came to Canada in 1919.
There’s no record of him ever being with Amundsen on an expedition, but he was a member of the Sverdrup Expedition. That expedition, while exploring the Arctic in 1898, got iced in and spent the years from 1898 to 1902 charting more territory (160.000 sq kms) than any other polar expedition in history.
